Happy Birthday Mom!

She may be the most important woman in your life, so when it’s time to say “Happy Birthday Mom!” you want to make it special and memorable. We’ve got some great ideas that may help!

Happy Birthday Mom!

Happy Birthday Mom (Mother, Mama, Mum)

Your mom is the first woman you know and love. Moms want what’s best for their children and do whatever it takes to help us achieve our goals and dreams. When her birthday rolls around - especially if it’s a milestone birthday - it’s a great opportunity to try to recognize just how much we appreciate our wonderful moms.

Happy Birthday to an Amazing Woman

Adult mom and daughter

If your mom is anything like mine, she will never tell you what she really wants for her birthday and she will never ask for anything! She seems to have “everything” so there’s nothing that she really needs, either. So how do you make her feel special on her birthday?

The answer: find her passions! There has to be something your mom really loves (besides you, of course) and that’ll lead you to her gift.

Does she really love to create? Her art might be baking, quilting, painting watercolors, or even tattooing. Perhaps there is a new tool that can help her with her favorite hobby? Maybe there’s a class that you can take together! Or perhaps you can arrange a gallery showing - even if it’s a virtual show. Show your mom support and appreciation by finding the perfect gift that relates to her art.

Does she love music? I grew up listening to whatever my mom was listening to. She’d play a record (yes, vinyl!) while we did our Saturday morning chores. I still feel nostalgic when I hear some of the tracks from those records! One of her constants was Elton John, who was one of her favorite musicians. Whether it was a record or, eventually, a cassette tape, his music was played frequently in our house.

When I grew up and had the opportunity, I took my mom to see Elton in concert for her 45th birthday. It was way beyond what I had ever spent on a concert ticket before, but the show featured Elton John along with master storyteller Billy Joel in their Face to Face Tour (1994). Ironically, Billy Joel was one of the first artists that Mom had bought for me on cassette, shortly after “Uptown Girl” came out. So, Mom got to see one of her favorites and we now have the incredible memory of spending that time together.

Whatever your mom’s favorite genre, consider giving her the gift of music. It really is a gift that gives back!

Does she love the sea? Perhaps Mom is most comfortable on a beach with her toes in the water. Or smelling the salty sea air. Assuming that she doesn’t live at the seaside, this could be a great idea to give her a memorable gift. Budget permitting, her special gift could range from a dinner cruise for her and the family, a waterfront vacation rental for a long weekend of R&R, or an all-expenses-paid, dream Mediterranean vacation for Mom and a guest.

I think you get the point! When it comes to making your mom feel truly special and appreciated for her birthday, giving her a gift that she wouldn’t ask for and maybe wouldn’t buy for herself can really hit the mark!

Happy Birthday Mother-in-Law

Making a birthday special for your Mother-in-law may not be quite as easy as planning something for your mom. For one, you don’t have the same lifetime full of memories that are going to provide you with incredible insight. But you do have a great source of information - you can rely on your partner for help!

Recently, my best friends’ mother-in-law reached her milestone 70th birthday. Her actual birthday was at a time when we were still locked down because of COVID-19 restrictions, so my bestie and her partner organized a Group Video and invited friends and family from all over - including as far away as Australia - to contribute. Her mother-in-law wiped away tears of joy a few times as she watched her Group Video during a brief porchside visit.

Just this past weekend, with restrictions lifted, it was time for the in-person celebration. The most important thing in the world to this mother-in-law is her family, so my bestie and her hubby arranged for his three brothers and their families to come together for the first time in over a year. His oldest brother even flew in from the West Coast! Being surrounded by her family, including her very young grandbabies, was the absolute best birthday gift possible for this mother-in-law!

Happy Birthday Mommy

Mom with young daughter

Sometimes, you need to find the perfect gift for a mom on behalf of her children. It’s not always easy to find something that the children will be excited for Mom to open,

while also finding something that Mom is happy to receive.

We love the idea of a homemade gift, combined with a gift card. Have access to the photos on Mom’s phone or Facebook feed? Grab some snaps of the family and pets and print them out. Have the kiddos make a few small drawings for Mom. When you have a collection of about 25-30 images, arrange them all in the shape of a heart and frame them in a large frame that she can hang on a wall at home, or even in her office.

Package her gift with a gift card for something that Mom can do to feel special and pampered - perhaps it’s picking out a new outfit, a pedicure, a spa day, a movie night out with a friend, etc. Whatever will make Mommy feel great!

When it’s time to say “Happy Birthday Mom”, do what you can to make Mom’s celebration as personal and thoughtful as possible. If you truly understand her interests and what makes her happy, then the effort that you put into finding, making, or planning her birthday celebration will be incredibly rewarding!
